In 2010 the New Zealand based company Humes Pipeline Systems, a division of Fletcher Building Ltd, started the process of becoming the supplier of choice for a new concrete prestressed sleeper for KiwiRail. KiwiRail run the network of rail in New Zealand with over 4,000km of rail to manage and maintain. KiwiRail went to the market with an idea on developing a new high performance sleeper design. The tender- ing process was tough with many interested parties, including overseas players. So it was with great pleasure Humes won the contract and set about building a brand new state-of-the-art factory to make this new sleeper.
