Concrete composites with alternative binder types based on biomimetic structures

A contribution to the development of sustainable and earthquake-resistant concrete columns

In cases where ductile material properties have outstanding importance, nature presents many examples of plants that have hollow “structural“ elements with a hierarchical layered structure, such as grasses. The construction of hollow concrete columns based on the hierarchical layered structure of plant cell walls improves the specific lightweight properties and ductility under flexural loads. The use of alternative bio-based materials enables sustainable structures beyond established construction concepts.
