Pavimentos de Tudela (Spain) has developed a new concrete prefabricated paving blocks called ecoGranic, applying the latest innovations in the field of nanotechnology and based on the action of TiO2 nanoparticles doped with carbon as photocatalyst. In the last years, numerous research activities in the construction sector are being conducted in order to find new materials environmentally friendly. Nowadays, some products have been successfully developed to destroy some atmospheric pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) or Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). However, no studies have been performed in order to reduce particulate matter (PM) levels in the atmosphere, which is abundant in urban areas and presents adverse effects on human health and ecosystems. Pavimentos de Tudela produces and commercialises ecoGranic, a pavement that has showed a great efficiency in the reduction of NOx and PM concentrations. This effect has been analysed under real conditions in a field study carried out in April 2013 in Shenzhen, one of the most polluted cities of China.
