Reinforced concrete structures are neither of unlimited durability nor free from maintenance requirements. In cases where carbonation of the concrete cover or chloride ingress may occur and thus reinforcement steel corrosion and concrete spalling may be expected, and/or when especially high stipulations are placed on construction component safety, it makes sense both technically and economically to utilise additional protective measures against corrosion.
