A study on the wear of planetary concrete mixers

Extending the usable life of mixer blades

When designing, commissioning, and operating the mechanical components of a machine, wear is one of the main factors that need to be predicted and monitored. The major goal in this context will always be the avoidance of early machine part replacement on account of premature reductions in functionality. In a market where one can witness a continuous increase in material costs, it is mandatory for any enterprise to prolong the life of as many of its equipment components as possible, for it is only this way that the company can remain competitive. For this reason, OMG – Sicoma, in collaboration with the University of Perugia, has been studying the possibility of extending the usable life of mixer blades as those major components of concrete mixers that are particularly exposed to wear. The focus of this study – theoretically as well as experimentally – has been on the different configurations of such blades both in terms of their positioning and their individual shape. ||
