Self-Compacting Concrete with Micronized CalciumCarbonate

Experimental optimization of normal strength self-compacting concrete

This work presents the experimental optimization of normal strength self-compacting concrete mixes using fine calcium carbonates as filler; its corresponding self-compactability measures, and some physical-mechanical and durable characteristics in the hardened state. In the fresh state, the study evaluates the influence of the above filler on the fluidity and cohesion of the cementitious paste, and its repercussion on the flowability, blocking resistance and stability at the concrete level. The physical-mechanical characterization includes the evaluation of the total shrinkage in specimens kept in dry environment, and the evolution of the compressive strength up to 28 days. In terms of durability, the carbonation depth was evaluated up to an age of 5 months. Test results indicate that the use of micronized filler increased the flowability and passing ability of the evaluated SCC mixes, lead to a better surface aspect, and to a higher rate of strength gain, without increasing the material shrinkage.
