Is Self-Compacting Concrete the future of concreteconstruction?

Lafarge Aggregates and Concrete UK, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE7 1PL, UK

Self-compacting concrete is a material which remains on the boundaries of large scale concrete construction, specifically in frame construction. It is a material that is substantially different to conventional concrete and has had a range of benefits attributed to it. In light of such benefits it is necessary to understand the industry and construction practices that influence the application of concrete, in order to recognize potential for change, to further its use. This paper draws upon industrial and academic literature alongside comment and observations of contracting organisations and construction projects. Through this process a number of key aspects relating to the use of SCC in frame construction have been identified and discussed. As a consequence it has been possible to develop recommendations on how industry can change to enable the uptake of SCC and also how construction may change in the future to accept SCC.
