Over the past decades, significant attention has been focused on waste tyre management, since the presence of waste tyres in the environment can have negative effects on sustainable development. Just like most EU countries, Croatia also recycles large quantities of accumulated tyres, although not all by-products are equally reused. Starting from the year 2006, EU Directive 1999/31/EC clearly prohibits any kind of disposal of waste tyres in the environment. Predictably, the quantity of waste tyres available for recycling significantly increased. In accordance with this directive, Croatia drafted and accepted a regulation on management of waste tyres [1]. Researchers from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Zagreb investigated possibilities for reusing rubber, steel and textile fibres obtained during mechanical recycling in concrete and have developed an innovative material which helps to follow waste hierarchy by using recycled tyres and converting them in new eco innovative product [2–6].
