A large part of industrial by-products like foundry sand and bottom ash are used in land filling of low lying areas. Research in different countries has suggested the possibility of using these by-products in cement based materials such as concrete and controlled low-strength materials (CLSM). A formal frame work for use of these waste products is in different stages of development in different parts of the world, but is virtually non-existent in India. The construction boom in India coupled with limited supply of natural aggregates and the emphasis on infra-structure development has brought the use of these by-products to the forefront. This paper presents the Indian scenario of recycling, along with brief overview of the global scenario. Since the research related to the use of foundry sand and bottom ash is almost nonexistent in India, an investigation was carried out to study the effect of bottom ash and foundry sand in various percentages in concrete for different mechanical properties like compressive and tensile split strength at the ages of 7, 28, 90 and 365 days along with durability properties like carbonation.
