Modern white pigments – New innovative products as alternatives to classic titanium dioxide

Oxerra Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, 65396 Walluf, Deutschland

Titanium dioxide is the most widely used white pigment. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) refers to the IV-valent oxide of titanium (titanium(IV) oxide). It has the highest refractive index of all pigments and also has a strong brightening effect. This is coupled with the property that titanium dioxide has a lack of absorption in the visible spectral range between 380 nm and 700 nm. These outstanding physico-chemical properties mean that anyone who wants to "whiten" their products or "brighten" colour shades, cements or products often cannot avoid titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide pigments are non-toxic and are characterised by particularly good resistance to light and weathering. It therefore clearly outperforms all other white pigments and white minerals and has an excellent brightening effect even when the surface is wet [1,2,3].
