This paper presents an overview of the sustainability of concrete aggregates used to produce concrete and concrete elements. Factors that may drive future aggregate demand are examined, highlighting the effects of urbanisation, as well as population and economic growth in the different regions of the world. The paper presents alternatives to traditional sand and gravel aggregates and concludes that recycled aggregates, crusher sand, and slag aggregates offer sustainable solutions.
