Standard 70-meter long UHPC precast post-tensioned U-girder

Precast bridge construction

More than one hundred and twenty ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) bridges have been built in Malaysia since the year 2010. Among these, only six are footbridges whereases the rest were designed for traffic load as per BD37/01 [1] or Eurocode 1 [2]. The UHPC used in Malaysia is mainly structural grade, intended for use in precast pretensioned or post-tensioned concrete flexural members. Structural grade UHPC has been consistently produced by Dura Technology Sdn Bhd (DTSB). It consists of Portland cement-based materials optimized using particle packing theory to develop a minimum 28 days characteristic compressive strength of 140/155 MPa, and with high strength, high aspect ratio steel fibers that result in a minimum characteristic first and post cracking tensile strengths of fctk,el = 7 MPa and fctfk = 8 MPa, respectively; and minimum characteristic modulus of rupture of 20 MPa. The material has excellent post-cracking strain hardening, ductility, and toughness. Cast-in-placed UHPC (which is generally used as stitching concrete for precast components) has been produced as well. It has minimum 28 days characteristic compressive strength of 120/135 MPa, and minimum characteristic modulus of rupture of 15 MPa. Hardened UHPC has excellent durability represented by freeze-thaw resistance, water absorption, chloride permeability and abrasion resistance.
