SCC in Slovenia

Experience with mixing, casting and testing

In Slovenia, intensive laboratory research on SCC mixes prepared using typical locally available materials started in year 2001, when the applied research project "SCC for structures on Slovene motorways" was granted to our research group at University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, by Motorway Company in the Republic of Slovenia. One of the major Slovenian construction companies, the Primorje Group, was invited to cooperate in the project. The company is a specialist in the construction of highly demanding engineering structures such as tunnels, viaducts, bridges, hydroelectric power stations and purification plants, but also a leading manufacturer of precast elements. At that time, this company already had its first experience with SCC employing round gravel aggregates for precast. The SCC mix was designed by a manufacturer of chemical admixtures. Its price was relatively high due to a high content of cement (420 kg) , a minor content of limestone filler (50 kg), chemical admixtures (superplasticizer and viscosity agent), and also a higher price for round gravel aggregates as compared to crushed ones. However, the benefits of using SCC due to the elimination of noise caused by the vibration process and an improved productivity nevertheless prevailed over the higher price of the concrete. This type of SCC made by white cement was used for casting specially designed precast elements for the Millennium Bridge fence in Podgorica, Montenegro (Fig. 1 and Fig. 2). The elements were cast in Slovenia and transported to Montenegro.
