Alternative cementitious solutions for sustainable concrete in the Gulf region

Equivalent concrete performance concept

With concrete being the most widely used construction material globally, Portland cement (PC) manufacture and CO2 emissions are two environmental concerns that go hand in hand: for every tonne of Portland cement produced, approximately 870 kg of CO2 are emitted. On the other hand, the Gulf region is experiencing a growth in construction sector and trends predict even higher future demands for cement production. Replacing, therefore, PC with alternative low carbon cements (LCC) while still achieving performance requirements now becomes a crucial aspect in the emerging of environmental awareness. Prominent examples of LCC that can potentially reduce the embodied CO2 of concrete by more than 70% using the equivalent concrete performance concept are the super-sulfated cements; a cementitious system on which this paper focuses on.
