Bearing failures used to occur every two or three months with the blade carrier of a concrete saw, resulting in eight hour shutdowns at a British concrete pipe manufacturer. Engineers from NSK investigated the application within the context of their Added Value Programme (AVP), and discovered that concrete dust was causing these premature bearing failures. Dust – as the findings showed – was penetrating behind the seals into the bearing and was contaminating the lubricant in the capped deep grooved ball bearings.
