Requirements placed on bridges nowadays – alongside sustainability – include environmental friendliness and resource conservation. This means that a bridge has to be built with less construction material while maintaining its load-bearing capacity. Any such structure must also have low maintenance costs and long life expectancy. Until recently, these objectives seemed impossible to attain when using concrete as a material. However, the first two road bridges made from carbon concrete prove the opposite. Corrosion-resistant carbon reinforcement enables concrete bridges to be constructed efficiently whilst saving on resources.
