The second child of Mercedes and Friedrich Pfeiffer, Ulrich Pfeiffer was born in Karlsruhe on 29 April 1933. He spent his childhood and youth in Ettlingen, where he completed an apprenticeship at Deutsche Bank after leaving school. Following two years at a French language school in Switzerland, Ulrich Pfeiffer began his professional career as a management assistant at the Wibau company in Gelnhausen/Hessen.
