C³-carbon concrete – a composite material that will determine the future of construction

Challenges, market opportunities and practical implementation examples

Savings can be achieved over the entire life cycle of a building through the use of carbon reinforced concrete, since the costs of manufacturing, transport, assembly, repair and demolition can be greatly reduced. Moreover, as studies show, higher incomes can be attained in the property business. For example, the use of carbon reinforced concrete allows a major reduction in the thickness of a wall or façade construction, thus increasing the rentable floor area while the exterior dimensions of the building remain constant. Furthermore, the degree of prefabrication in the precast plant can be increased through lighter structural elements made of textile reinforced concrete. This not only lowers costs, but also maintains quality at a constantly high level. Recent market studies also emphasise that there are great usage possibilities in many other areas of the construction industry. A great deal of potential is seen in particular in precast construction, where extensive studies have already been carried out. However, it will only be possible to tap into a wide market through automation in the precast element sector in order to be able to compete with steel reinforced concrete applications. As the precast sector has already had very good initial experience with carbon reinforced concrete, this, along with the reinforcement of structures, represents the first step towards opening up the market.
