New concrete tower construction method for wind turbines

Vienna University of Technology, Institute of Structural Engineering, Vienna, Austria

Wind farms have become fashionable – but what is the best method for constructing them? The team around Prof. Johann Kollegger of the Institute of Structural Engineering at Vienna University of Technology has developed a new technique for constructing towers that combines the distinctive advantages of previous methods. Large double wall elements are first joined to each other on the ground and then raised up on top of each other and finally concreted in. This new method has been successfully tested at the test site of Oberndorfer, a company locat- ed in Gars am Kamp, Austria. Erecting wind turbines should now become quicker and more cost-effective.
