The effect of limestone filler, cement fineness, and steam curing temperature

Precast applications of self-consolidating concrete

The use of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) in the precast/prestressed applications can improve production schedules due to reduced demand on worker demand and superior surface finish. However, SCC has higher cement content compared to traditional concrete which increases the cost and the negative environmental impact associated with concrete in construction applications. To partially address this issue, cement content in SCC could be reduced by replacing cement with fillers such as Limestone Filler (LF). This paper investigates the influence of LF, cement fineness, and steam curing temperature on the performance of SCC. Steam curing was conducted at 55 °C and 82 °C. Fresh properties, compressive strength (tested at 16 hours, 28 days, and 300 days), rapid chloride permeability (RCPT) (tested at 28 days and 300 days), and resistance to delayed ettringite formation (DEF) were evaluated. The results showed improved early age strength (i.e., 16 hours) with the use of LF when concrete is steam cured at 55 °C. The addition of LF reduced concrete permeability and also reduced expansion due to DEF. Increasing steam curing temperature from 55 °C to 82 °C caused a significant increase in concrete permeability and expansion
