Concrete can be a highly durable material that can resist the effects of deleterious chemicals. However, its exposure to the environment can give rise to different types and severity of alterations depending on the aggressive agents and the type of concrete. Certain soils and waters could be of an acidic nature and bring about a certain degree of alteration in the concrete. Acid attack on concrete is a result of its basic character, which in contact with the acid medium gives rise to neutralisation reactions which alter the phases of concrete. This may extend to the aggregates and will lead to a loss of cohesion and mechanical properties.
