Up until now, the so-called “kneading bag test” has been used to determine the setting time of concrete. For this, the processor will put a small amount of concrete into a plastic bag and, at different time intervals, tests for when he can no longer push his thumb into the concrete. This method is very subjective and unsafe, which is why the time determined needs to be increased by 25% in accordance with DIN 18218. With BEUS (a German acronym that stands for BEtonUltraSchall, i. e. ‘concrete ultrasound’), an ultrasonic device for the exact measurement of the setting time, such inaccurate processes have become a thing of the past.
