The safety of residents was the prime concern in the ventilation design of the underground car park in the Panzerwiese hall of residence in Munich. That is why the openings of the inlet and exhaust shafts were positioned four or five metres from the buildings on the surface. This prevents the poisonous car exhaust gases - or smoke in the event of a fire - from penetrating open windows in the housing above the under-ground car park.
