The German Energieeinsparverordnung (EnEV - Energy Saving Regulation) became compulsory in 2001. As a consequence, the low energy standard, which up to then could be negotiated for a new building individually, was prescribed as a general regulation. What is special about the EnEV is its holistic view of energy sources – oil, gas, electricity, in other words, primary energy and primary energy expenditure –, the orientation and geometry of the building and the type and scope of the insulating measures. This usually results in increased demands on the insulation of the outer shell which, in turn, creates a need for a high thermal insulation system for the outside walling.
