Development of a construction methodfor long span bridges with low beamheight by applying ultra

Applied concrete technology for the precast industry

As a new generation material Ultra High Strength Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UFC) has high strength properties, high durability as well as good consistency. The application of this material to the production of PC (prestressed concrete) bridges makes it possible to reduce the self weight to 1/4 – 1/5 compared to the usual PC bridges using conventional concrete. In this report, a new construction method, which enables to make a long span bridge with short construction periods as well as low cost, is discussed considering the assembling of U-shaped pre-cast concrete girders and pre-cast concrete slabs. Some new technologies are applied for not only producing the Ushaped girders and slabs but also the joining of the pre-cast blocks. Through verification experiments, “Akakura Onsen Yukemuri Footbridge” with a 35.3m span, 3.5m width and 0.95m height, was constructed to confirm the merit of these technologies.
