Overcoming some challenges when introducingSCC in an existing precast plant

Practical experiences with self compacing concrete

When the majority of the precast/prestressed concrete plants in the Unites States where built, SCC was not even a dream. Nobody could bring the idea that, at some point, new developments in concrete technology will bring high-flow concretes. Therefore specific aspects of certain precast operations that are essential to successfully implement SCC, and are not commonly discussed in the SCC literature, can make a huge impact when implementing SCC. They include but are not limited to: marginal gradation of locally available aggregates, forms on a sloping grade, and the specific characteristics of the concrete delivery system. Before replacing aggregates, leveling all forms, changing site conditions or modifying the delivery technique, the properties of the selected SCC could be adjusted appropriately to accommodate these challenges.
