One of the largest construction projects in Berlin in 2006 was the tunnel for the four-track railway line which crosses the town centre from the north to the south. The tunnel, approximately 3.5 km long, was created in both open and closed form. As the tunnel runs both directly beneath Potsdamer Platz, with its high-quality buildings, and through the government quarter, the need to protect surrounding buildings from secondary noise and vibration is correspondingly high. In order to provide the necessary degree of vibration protection, mass-spring systems with different resonance frequencies and cross-sections were built in over an area of altogether 12 km.
