Admixtures: characterisation and controlby chemical and rheological methods

A study on fresh concrete properties

High Performance Concrete (HPC) is a concept that has already become well accepted by the construction industry. High strength, Ultra high strength, Self-Compacting and lightweight concretes, among others, are types of concretes already used in many structures around the world. These kinds of concretes demand relatively advanced technologies in order to be produced. This advanced technology is mainly related to the types of admixtures used [1]. For example HPC’s are more sensitive when small changes are made on its dosages; the stability of SCC can be strongly affected by slight variations on its water content or its admixture proportion or type. For SCC, the most common admixtures used are those based on policarboxiylic ether. This type of admixtures improves the concrete flowability, allowing low water/cement ratios.
