The resistance to frost/road salt and poresize distribution with zero slump concretes

CemTec Beratung GmbH, 8853 Lachen, Switzerland

In Europe during the last 15 years, changes have been carried out to the recipes of zero slump concrete products. Latterly, still larger deviations from traditional zero slump systems have been observed. It is increasingly noticeable, especially with concrete paving blocks which have been produced on pallet machines, that the pavers no longer exhibit the expected resistance in areas prone to frost. First observations in this direction have already been pointed out and proven in diverse treatises from this author in the past. Since damage also occurs with products possessing good standard specification test results, the question must be asked if it might not be expedient to employ other testing methods with changed recipes in order to determine frost/road salt resistance.
