Manholes made from concrete comprise the manhole base, the shaft rings and the upper cover component. They allow access to the drainage system and are mostly to be found in areas with vehicle traffic. The joints between the components must be watertight whilst at the same time dissipating the loads from dead weight and dynamic traffic loads to the sub-soil (fig. 1). The component joints must never deform to and from like a spring under varying stress due to road traffic.
