The last of a total of 850 truck mixers left the DESY site in the middle of December 2007. They had brought over 6600 cu. metres of concrete from a total of four concrete works over a period of two and a half days without a break. Then the pouring was finished: the world’s longest monolithic (i.e. manufactured in one piece) concrete slab is a proud 280 metres long, 24 metres wide and 1 metre thick. It serves as the base plate for the new experimental hall that is currently being built for the PETRA III project at DESY. “Fortunately, everything went without a hitch,” says a delighted Prof. Edgar Weckert, PETRA III Project Manager, “that was a masterful performance on the part of our general contractors Züblin!”
