An overview on the properties of Calcium AluminateConcrete (CAC)

Concrete for special early-age strength requirements

Calcium Aluminate Cement (CAC) has several unique properties that make it a suitable material for specialist applications where strength development or durability properties of Ordinary Portland Cement might not be sufficient. Despite its unique properties, recent literature has pointed out problems encountered in using this type of cement on structures worldwide. This is mainly caused by the conversion process that characterises this type of concrete and which results in a loss of long-term strength. In most publications, construction guidelines are presented in order to minimise this detrimental process. In addition, the effect of curing temperatures is also dealt with thoroughly in literature. Despite the well-known conversion problem, CAC may be performing much better in terms of durability. Over 80 years of use of concrete based on calcium aluminate cement in sulphate-prone environments has indicated its resilience to attack from sulphates. In addition to its superior performance in sulphate-prone environments, this concrete is also doing well in seawater.
