The load transmission in precast concrete manholes demanded by the DIN V 4034 – 1 standard in Germany puts many planners and local councils in a tight spot. In the last few years, built-in load compensating elements with or without an integrated seal have become popular as a replacement for the elaborate mortar layer. The advantages for those responsible quickly become obvious: economy, fast assembly and safety are decisive for the success of the manhole systems. Making a selection from the various systems available on the market has now become very difficult, since each system follows a different principle but has the same objective: continuous, non-elastic load compensation, as prescribed by the DIN standard. The trend is, however, clear: the mortar layer is being used less and less!
