Purpose-built item for the Colognemetropolitan railway project

Fachvereinigung Betonrohre und Stahlbetonrohre e.V., 53179 Bonn, Germany

According to information from the awarding authority, Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe AG, this is the largest urban construction project in Germany at the present time. In the course of the new Cologne north-south metropolitan railway development, approximately 691,000 m3 excavated earth will be moved and approximately 364,500 m3 concrete and more than 52,000 t steel utilised. The Cologne north-south metropolitan railway consortium (southern section) – this includes Bilfinger Berger AG, Ed. Züblin AG and Wayss & Freitag Ingenieurbau AG – has been awarded the contract for this southern construction section. Two underground tunnels each about 3 km long will be driven from Kurt-Hackenberg-Platz near the central station right through the old city centre to Marktstrasse in the south of Cologne. The engineers will subsequently undertake work on several railway stations. The construction of the future Severinstrasse stop will be carried out using a remarkable special procedure because of the structural factors entailed there.
