In one of the largest current building projects in Europe, the commercial airport Berlin-Schönefeld is being extended at a cost of around € 2 billion into the major airport Berlin-Brandenburg International, which will replace all three of the current airports in Berlin (Tegel, Tempelhof and Schönefeld) in 2011. The prognosis is for at least 20 million air passengers in the year 2010. That would be asking too much of the present three airports in Berlin, which can deal with a total of 14 to 17 million passengers per year.
