The capillarity of self-compacting concreteincorporating fly ash

An experimental study

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the use of self-compacting concrete (SCC) as this type of concrete can offer various advantages. These include pumping the concrete to great heights, its flow through congested reinforcing bars under the concrete’s own weight, a reduction in construction time, labour cost, and noise hazards on the construction site. In addition, SCC allows for the construction of more slenderly shaped building elements [1]. In this study, the influence of including fly ash (FA) on capillary water absorption and other properties of SCC is investigated. For this purpose, Portland cement (PC) was partially replaced with 0 – 80 % FA (in increments of 20). The properties studied include workability, capillary water absorption, compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity.
