Development of an ultra high performanceconcrete for use in precast plants

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), 76131 Karlsruhe, Germany

Construction in existing building stock continues to gain in importance in Germany. The possibility to manufacture more slender and thus lighter performance-optimised structural components from ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) gives rise to significant competitive advantages for the precast concrete element sector. Beyond that, the use of UHPC enables special requirements from the planning side – such as the so-called ‘sharp-edgedness’ or slenderness – to be met when building with concrete, resulting in market opportunities in the highly valued new building segment. Hence, the use of UHPC results for the precast element industry in an extension to its product portfolio, which usually consists of industrially mass-produced structural elements, extending as far as individually manufactured structural elements.
