While it may have caught on slowly, sustainable construction has reached a critical mass in the United States. For the past decade, the U.S. has lagged behind other countries in the acceptance of sustainable construction standards among project owners and contractors. But the balance has tipped, and there is a green building revolution now percolating that stretches from New York to California and across the provinces of Canada. As the U.S. construction industry enters its third year of recession, the one bright spot is the continued advancement of sustainable building practices and the near certainty that green construction will play a key role in the economic recovery in North America. That could be good news for the precast concrete industry – if we position ourselves as the material of choice for green building by educating the specifying community of the many sustainable benefits of precast concrete and aligning precast with the standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.
