The Pfänder tunnel - well known as a bottleneck between Germany, Austria and Switzerland - is at the present time being enlarged by an additional tube to prevent, in future, the current frequent traffic congestion and waiting times. Great quantities of ready-mix concrete will be needed at predetermined times for this construction project that will extend over a period totalling approximately 48 months. Preliminary estimations of the overall amount required run at approximately 160,000 m³ - a respectable challenge for even a large ready-mix production facility. Express Beton was able to secure the contract for supplying this amount of concrete. The company operates two concrete production facilities in Lauterach and Dornbirn directly adjacent to the tunnel. However, amongst all the facilities operated by Express Beton up to the present time, the plant in Dornbirn had been intended as a replacement facility and was of insufficient capacity.
