At the end of september, fib C6 has organised a seminar on “Precast Structures in Seismic Areas”. The subject of the seminar was brought to the attention by repeating questions worldwide, doubting the compatibility of precast structures with seismic conditions. Where some decades ago, knowledge of precast in seismic areas was understood and manually calculated by many experts in the field, tendency shows growing number of designers and contractors being less familiar with and drifting away from the prefab multi-stock solution when facing seismic conditions. Although fib’s field of expertise is widely spread and very convincing, they keep on feeling resistance from some against precast and see it as their duty within fib to continuously counter the biased criticism. Furthermore, the unfortunate recent earthquakes have increased the seismic concerns in the construction sector worldwide.
