Sustainability of structures with precast elements

A multi-criteria decision-making model

Escalating global challenges demand a reevaluation of conventional practices across various sectors, including in construction, to address pressing environmental, economic, and societal concerns. Sustainable construction practices have gained momentum as stakeholders seek strategies to mitigate environmental impacts, conserve resources, enhance energy efficiency, and bolster the resilience of built environments. In this context, precast concrete structures have emerged as a promising avenue, given that these techniques not only optimize processes but also inherently contribute to sustainability goals by, for example, reducing material usage. This article presents an approach to quantifying the sustainability performance of precast concrete structures, which can be used to make decisions based on sustainability criteria. In particular, a model based on the MIVES multi-criteria decision-making methodology is introduced and used for comparing a precast and a cast in situ reinforced concrete building.
