Modularization for scalable concrete construction: modular development and interface design

Presentation of the Priority Programme (SPP) 2187 in short articles

Modular design enables the standardization of components and processes in the production phase and the erection of the structure. As a result, economies of scale can be used for different building sizes and types [1]. The use of ultra-high-performance concrete in combination with innovative reinforcement types enables the construction of lighter buildings and offers a sustainable alternative to classic reinforced concrete [1, 2]. In the joint, interdisciplinary research project of the Institute for Product Development (IPEK) and the Department of Concrete Construction at the Institute of Concrete Construction and Building Materials Technology (IMB) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), it was investigated how modular and se- ries system development can be used for the construction industry and how to develop a basic concept for the construction of rigid frame structures. Optimization methods for modular development were researched by IPEK, while the development of standardized force-transmitting interfaces between rod-shaped precast concrete elements was tackled by IMB. Figure 1 shows an exemplary skeleton of a structure which, due to its rod-shaped structural components, is suitable for standardized modular development.
