From theory to practice: demonstrator built from carbon concrete shells

German Research Foundation Priority Programme (SPP) 1542

Weight reduction with load-bearing structures, savings on raw materials in manufacturing buildings and the economic advantages resulting from these factors are responsible for the ever increasing importance of lightweight construction methods. Intensive research is being carried out on new types of concrete structures with integrated textile reinforcement and good lightweight construction properties. In the context of the German Research Foundation Priority Programme (SPP) 1542, the Professorial Chair of Light-weight Structures and Polymer Technology at the Chemnitz University of Technology (TU Chemnitz) has developed a new formwork system made from glass fibre reinforced plastic for manufacturing light, thin-walled concrete construction elements. The knowledge gained from basic research was subsequently put into practice with the partners, Fiber-Tech Group and Betonwerk Schuster.
