The world today is becoming progressively urban: 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 68% by 2050. With existing infrastructure struggling to keep up, 4.2 billion people still live without safely managed sanitation and about 673 million people still do not use covered facilities. This has serious implications on public health, the environment and the economy: every year, more than 10,000 children under 5 years die due to sanitation-related illnesses and the economy loses more than $200 billion annually.
