60 years of pioneering precast technology

Elematic, 37801 Akaa, Finland

The need for durable, efficient and safe construction provides a strong foundation for Elematic’s business. In 1959, brothers Pentti and Pauli Virtanen founded Toijalan Teräsvalmiste (TTV). They saw opportunity in the demand for precast production technology following Finland’s rapid urbanisation. The company manufactured table molds for facades and wall elements. TTV’s first substantial project in 1964 – a complete precast element factory – marked a leap in the industrialisation of precast construction. It was the first of its kind, with production lines equipped with moving molds and conveyor belt technology. TTV delivered the first battery molds to Sweden in 1967, but the big international breakthroughs, in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, happened in the mid-1970s. Elematic’s trademark hollow-core slab line was developed in 1971. In the 1980s, TTV led the world in hollow-core production technology, enabling more variation in precast elements and introducing shear compaction.
