WLAN in the precast facility: low maintenance, reliable and flexible

Unitechnik Cieplik & Poppek AG, 51764 Wiehl, Germany

The third paper in the series "Increasing Productivity and Quality Management" examines the use of WLAN in the automation of a precast concrete facility. The report examines the question of whether the use of WLAN in the precast facility is technically and economically viable. A medium that is the obvious choice for use in the home or office must meet completely different requirements in the industrial environment. Therefore, standard wireless routers cannot be used, but rather components which have been specially designed for industry. To make the distinction clear, this report will also refer to IWLAN, or Industrial Wireless LAN. IWLAN has a number of technical properties that qualify it as a transmission medium within a control system.
