A new sensor that measures the total air content of concrete while mixing

It is well established that freeze-thaw durable concrete often requires proper levels of entrained air. However, this is frequently accompanied by high batch to batch variability since there are many factors that affect the development of an air void system. Furthermore, all concrete has some amount of air, which can be correlated to other concrete properties. A sensor has been developed that can accurately determine the total air content by volume and the temperature of concrete, while the concrete is mixing. This sensor provides continuous, real-time air measurements during the entire mixing process for stationary, wall mixers, which allows precasters to adjust and improve their practices. This paper presents an overview of the technology as well as lab and field correlation data.
