At the Institute for Structural Engineering at Vienna University of Technology, a new construction method for shell structures made of planar precast concrete components has been developed. The main feature of this method consists in assembling prefabricated planar components to form a shell. These planar structural components are placed on a flat working surface and connected by means of tensioning elements. Pneumatic formwork is then utilised for reshaping this planar slab to form a shell by inflating a rubbery membrane with air to lift the elements. Once the precast components are in position, the joints that occur in the shaping process are filled with grouting material or shotcrete.
