Aerogels exhibit outstanding thermal insulation and are permanently hydrophobic due to their method of manufacture. In the context of a research project, a lightweight concrete was developed with significantly improved thermal insulation compared to air-insulated lightweight concrete materials. By the targeted influencing of the concrete components to form a higher packing density, the properties can be influenced in such a way that the material exhibits an excellent insulating effect. This article describes the material development as well as the experimentally determined material parameters and outlines the possibility of profitable ranges of application.
