With family business roots dating back to farming in 1930s, the Manthei family shares an entrepreneurial trait that has served them well for more than 80 years. In 1968, Ernie Manthei and his sons founded MDC Contracting to meet the need for infrastructure contracting such as roads and utility structures, as well as ready-mix concrete. In 2000, MDC co-founders Mark, Jim and Ben Manthei, with more than 30 years of construction experience, developed a large-scale retaining wall block system for an upscale development they were working on at the time. With nothing similar on the market, the Manthei brothers realized they had created something special – an engineered wet cast, natu- rally colored retaining wall block. That same year, Redi-Rock was launched and soon the family was licensing manufacturers around the world to make the new retaining wall product for the engineered wall market.
